CGA gift bolsters DAN Program, provides opportunities for students

Support from CGA Ontario offers unique opportunities for students and faculty.

A generous gift from the Certified General Accountants of Ontario will provide more resources for the DAN Program, its faculty, and students who plan to proceed with obtaining a CGA designation.

The CGA’s donation of more than $400,000 creates a professorship in accounting, plus it funds student prizes and awards and career counselling services for students in the DAN Program.

“Support from CGA Ontario offers a wonderful opportunity for our program, faculty and students,” says Mitch Rothstein, director of the DAN Program.

“Our re-designed curriculum includes all the university courses required to become a CGA,” adds Rothstein, “which gives our students an advantage in pursuing their CGA designation once they complete their degree at Western.”

This comes as good news for students who are majoring in accounting. “While I’m at Western, I’ve been able to complete all the courses I need to fast-track the CGA program,” says Marya Shabbir, a fourth-year accounting student. “I’ll be well prepared for the future.”

The faculty member who fills the CGA Ontario Professorship in Accounting will hold or be working towards obtaining a CGA designation. His or her practical experience will be an asset to students, says Rothstein, by providing insight and advice on what it takes to work as a CGA.

“By establishing the CGA Ontario Professorship in Accounting at Western,” says Doug Brooks, CEO, CGA Ontario, “we are providing students with opportunities to learn from an experienced leader and take their careers to the next level.”
