Internship serves as a win-win situation

Morgan Mantha
Participating in an internship provided Morgan Mantha with valuable work experience.

For 22-year-old Morgan Mantha, an internship with a major global corporation was a life-changing experience.

“I learned where I wanted to take my career,” says the fourth-year student. “I also came away with better people skills and the confidence that I could thrive in the corporate environment.”

Mantha is one of 17 students who participated in DAN internships in 2011/2012, which afford students unique opportunities to put their classroom and life skills to the test.

After travelling the world for a year, Mantha was drawn to a career in international finance. She enrolled in Western’s DAN Program and when the time came, jumped at the chance to intern at Celestica, an electronics manufacturing company headquartered in Toronto with operations around the world.

“I saw the internship as a differentiating factor in the job market and an opportunity to get an insider’s perspective on what actually happens in the business world,” she adds.

Her 16-month internship turned into a win-win situation for her and Celestica. “For our company, the internship program is an opportunity to bring in people with a fresh mindset and new ideas,” says Grace Turner, HR Internship Coordinator. “We also get to see potential employees in action and assess their capabilities and strengths.”

At Celestica, Mantha and her team coordinated training and communication for new projects around the world. Turner says Mantha quickly gained the respect of her co-workers and company executives. “As people saw her ability and work ethic, she was given a broader scope of responsibilities,” she says.

After graduating in 2013, Mantha plans to become a chartered accountant.

“The internship program is an excellent way to stand apart and gain some amazing work experience,” she says. “It was a huge learning opportunity for me, and I wouldn’t take any of it back.”
