A perfect fit

Lauren Fernandes

Lauren Fernandes and DAN were made for each other

"It's a rewarding feeling to know that the four years you invested in university have really contributed to your career."

That's Lauren Fernandes, who graduated from DAN in 2014. Fernandes now works as a Professional Services Analyst for The Nielsen Company, a leading consumer insights and market research company. The job is perfectly aligned with her honors specialization degree in consumer behavior.

Fernandes grew up in Markham, Ontario, and attended a small independent high school in Richmond Hill. "I was always at school 'after-hours,'" she says. "I liked being involved in lots of clubs and teams."

Fernandes looked for a university program that would give her the flexibility to pursue her broad interests and explore her creative side, while giving her a strong foundation in business. The DAN Program and the consumer behavior specialty stream were A perfect fit. "Consumer behavior is very analytical yet very creative at the same time," she says. "It's a unique sector with many different aspects."

In her fourth year at Western, Fernandes became President of the DAN Management Students' Association (DMSA). She describes the organization as "a key resource," serving as the student face of the program and as a liaison between students and faculty. Under her leadership, the DMSA held workshops on topics such as networking and interview skills, hosted guest speakers, and planned a series of networking events. "Students learned skills early in the year and then later on had an opportunity to put their skills into practice," she says.

Fernandes advises students coming into the DAN Program to embrace the many opportunities to get involved, and to be ready to work hard. She adds, "There will be lots of challenges – just remember to trust in yourself and don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it."
