A head start for a future career

Agnes Chan

After four years in the DAN Program, Alex Porter is ready to make his mark in the business world.

“Because the DAN Program is so encompassing in its business education, I’ve acquired a great toolbox to know how to approach and solve problems in the real world,” says Alex, BMOS’13.

Now that Alex has completed his degree, he plans to pursue his CGA designation. “I have an affinity with finance and accounting, so heading in this direction fits,” he says.

Through an agreement between the DAN Program and CGA Ontario, students such as Alex can take courses at Western that are requirements to obtain a CGA designation. As well, professionals with a CGA have spoken to classes in the DAN Program, giving students the added benefit of learning about the opportunities for CGAs.

“Our goal is to prepare students to hit the ground running when they graduate,” says Mitch Rothstein, director of the DAN Program. “Connections with professional organizations, such as the CGA, CMA and CA, give our students a competitive advantage in the marketplace.”

Alex agrees. “I have a head start in obtaining my CGA and preparing for a career in business,” says the 22-year-old from Thunder Bay, Ont., who eventually wants to be in a leadership role within the industrial sector.
