Exchange Opportunities
Exchange Programs
An international exchange allows you to study at a partner university abroad while continuing to work toward your Western degree. Exchange experiences provide opportunities to explore new cultures, broaden your academic perspective, and gain valuable international experience.
Planning ahead is essential. DAN Management students are strongly encouraged to consider an exchange during their third year to ensure they can meet degree requirements. Students planning an exchange in their final year should be aware that differences in academic calendars and grade release dates may delay graduation.
Start Early
Before selecting a host institution:
- Research potential exchange universities.
- Review available courses and any enrollment restrictions.
- Consider how courses will fit within your degree requirements.
- Plan your exchange for Year 3 whenever possible.
Your first step is to apply through Western International's Exchange Program. Upon acceptance into the exchange program, you will receive an Exchange form from their office.
Please follow the direction of the Exchange Office on the steps to become a Visiting student on Exchange.
The following instructions are for course evaluations only:
Step 1: Review Available Courses
Identify courses available to visiting exchange students at your host institution.
Step 2: Create a Course List
Select more courses than you intend to take to ensure alternatives are available if courses are denied or unavailable.
Step 3: Obtain Current Course Syllabi
Download detailed, current course syllabi for each course you wish to have evaluated.
Step 4: Complete the Exchange Form
Complete the student information section and sign the form.
Step 5: Submit Your Request
Submit your Exchange Form and supporting syllabi through the DAN Student Help Portal.
Step 6: Department Review
DAN Program Assistants will review Management and Organizational Studies courses and provide feedback through the Help Portal.
Step 7: Obtain Final Approval
Once all relevant departments have approved your courses, submit your documentation to Academic Counselling for final approval. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP! Your exchange is not officially approved until Faculty/Academic Counselling approval has been received.
Step 8: Prepare for Departure
Follow the remaining steps provided by Western International to finalize your exchange arrangements.

Taking a Course in an Other Institution
Letter of Permission Requests
A Letter of Permission (LOP) allows DAN Management students to take approved courses at another accredited university and receive credit toward their Western degree. Important: Approval must be obtained before registering in the course. Retroactive requests will not be considered.
Eligible Courses
LOPs are generally approved for:
- Elective or optional courses only
- Courses offered through approved institutions
- Courses taught by qualified faculty in the appropriate discipline
Courses That Will Not Be Approved
- Essay courses
- Courses required for your degree
- Courses required for professional designations (e.g., CPA, HRPA)
- Courses that do not meet Western's academic standards
To request an LOP, gather the following:
✓ Course description and prerequisites
✓ Timetable listing showing the course is offered
✓ Instructor information
✓ Number of contact hours
✓ Current course syllabus (full, detailed syllabus required)
✓ Completed and signed Letter of Permission Request Form (top section only)
✓ English translations of any non-English documents
Please note: Course descriptions alone are not sufficient for evaluation.
Step 1: Gather Documentation
Collect all required course information and supporting documents.
Step 2: Obtain Department Approval
If the course is outside DAN Management (e.g., Psychology, Philosophy, Biology), obtain approval from the appropriate department first.
Step 3: Submit to DAN Management
Submit your request and supporting documents through the DAN Student Help Portal.
Step 4: Academic Counselling Approval
Once DAN Management has reviewed your request, submit the approved documentation to Social Science Academic Counselling.
Please note: Your Letter of Permission is not official until Academic Counselling has approved it.
Step 5: Complete the Course
After completing the course, arrange for an official transcript to be sent directly to Western University.
Processing Time
Allow at least three weeks for review and approval. Processing times may be longer during peak periods.
Approval Is Not Guaranteed
Each request is assessed individually. Previous approvals do not guarantee future approval.
Credit Weight Matters
Western will not approve courses that transfer as less than 0.5 Western credit.
Examples:
- 6 ECTS = 0.5 Western credit
- 12 ECTS = 1.0 Western credit
- 3 ECTS = 0.25 credit (not eligible)
Follow Western's Academic Calendar
Courses must be completed within the applicable Western term:
- Fall: September–December
- Winter: January–April
- Summer: May–August
Students unable to meet these deadlines must contact Academic Counselling before the term ends.
Wait for Approval
Do not pay tuition, book travel, or arrange accommodations until your Letter of Permission has been officially approved.
Can I take a required MOS course on a Letter of Permission?
No. LOPs are generally restricted to elective or optional courses.
Can I request a preliminary course review?
No. DAN Management does not pre-approve or provide informal evaluations of potential courses.
How long does approval take?
Most requests require at least three weeks, with longer timelines possible during busy periods.
Will a course be approved because another student received approval previously?
Not necessarily. Every request is reviewed individually based on the student's program, course content, and academic requirements.
