Commercial Aviation Management (CAM)
Established in 1999, CAM was built on a bold idea: the future of aviation belongs to those who understand both flight and business. Commercial Aviation Management (CAM) combines business education and aviation studies to prepare students for careers in the aviation industry. As part of Western’s Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies (BMOS) degree, students develop management and leadership skills while exploring topics such as:
- airline operations
- aviation law
- safety management
- airport administration
One of CAM's most distinctive features is its flight option, which gives eligible students the opportunity to earn an Integrated Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (iATPL) while completing their BMOS degree. This unique combination of professional flight training and business education attracts students from across Canada who are looking to build careers in aviation.
Admission to the Commercial Aviation Management program is limited and highly competitive. Students apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) using program code EDN. During the application process, students indicate whether they are interested in the flight or non-flight pathway; however, this selection is for interest purposes only. All CAM students complete the same first-year curriculum, regardless of their intended pathway, and flight training does not begin until after first year.
In addition to the OUAC application, all prospective CAM students must complete a supplementary application. This application helps identify applicants who demonstrate a genuine passion for the aviation industry, strong multitasking abilities, and the personal qualities that contribute to success in the program.

The flight option of the Commercial Aviation Management (CAM) program is one of the unique features that we are very proud of. Many students are attracted to the CAM program because of the option of attaining the Integrated Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (iATPL) along with the BMOS (Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies) degree.
Students in the flight option begin pilot training at the commencement of their second year in the CAM program. This allows students to become familiar with the university environment and comfortable with their academic workload, before being faced with the challenges of pilot training. In addition to their academic coursework on campus, CAM students will complete classroom-based ground school and in-aircraft flight training with MFC Training at the London International Airport (CYXU). Students progress through ground school with their CAM classmates, which results in a strong camaraderie within the group.
Some applicants to the CAM program may have already completed some pilot training, your previous flight experience will be evaluated on an individual basis. It is possible that appropriate credit will be applied towards the flight training component of the program. Such credit is granted at the discretion of the Director of the Commercial Aviation Management program and the flight school.
A Commercial Aviation Management Student taking the Flight Option will graduate with the following credentials:
- Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies Degree (BMOS)
- Integrated Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence (iATPL)
- Night Rating
- Multi-Engine Rating
- Group 1 Instrument Rating
- 500 hours of integrated pilot ground school
In addition, all students interested in the flight option are required to obtain a valid Transport Canada Category 1 Medical Certificate upon entry to the first year, and all subsequent years of the BMOS program. This is the category of medical required for commercial pilots, and we want to ensure that all flight option students are medically-cleared for take off before they embark on training towards this career.
Each candidate of the UWO-CAM flight training program shall obtain a Category 1 TC Medical.
